I just know that you're looking back with tears filling your eyes at the days when your babies were babies. I know you're missing the days when your babies asked for cuddles and wanted to be rocked to sleep. Those days probably feel like they were yesterday. But there are a few things I want you to remember.
Please don't forget what life was like back then. You have a tendency to remember only the warm fuzzies, but you need to remember the days of spending hours getting your kids to nap, only to have one wake up right after the other went to sleep. Don't forget why the laundry never got done, because someone always needed you. Don't forget that feeling of despair about your three-year-old girl who changed her own diapers yet refused to go on the potty.
Speaking of the potty, when a young mom tells you that she doesn't even have time to use the bathroom, you should believe her. And when you see her at the grocery store or at Target, and you notice her balancing her cranky children, a lifetime supply of diapers, and food for a small army, smile at her and tell her you think she's doing a good job. When she starts to cry, tell her that even though you miss those days, you also remember how hard they were. (Oh, and by the way, please never, ever, ever hint that a stay-at-home mom has it easy. I don't think you would do this, but you never know.)
Love, Your Younger, Less Showered Self
